Longstories — Marenka Gabeler

In search of Nel, Installation of photography, sound and text (sound of the installation comes from lampshades on either side of the photo series), 2008 In an extraordinary project Marenka Gabeler, together with a number of prominent Dutch visual artists, was asked to empathize with the life stories of people suffering with lung cancer. Marenka created an extraordinary portrait of Nel de Korte, who died in April 2008. In ‘In search of Nel’ (original title, ‘Op zoek naar Nel’) Marenka created an impression of De Korte by taking photographs of the people who were near to her, and of personal objects, combined with audio fragments from an interview he artist held with family and friends. Even though you never literally meet or see De Korte you can feel her presence in this audio visual installation through the silent voice of things and through the many memories of people who loved her. Life seems as fleeting and unattainable as these words and images. From now on Nel de Korte lives in our minds...

In search of Nel, Installation of photography, sound and text, 2008 The installation was presented at Torch Gallery, Amsterdam, after which the exhibition toured hospitals of all large cities in the Netherlands.
